The power of vacuum is something that most people are already familiar with thanks to the modern cleaning appliance that makes picking up stray bits of dirt and dust so easy. There are everyday uses of vacuum that we barely notice. Every time you hang something up on a hook attached to a tile on the wall or affix your in-car navigation unit to the inside of the windshield then you are making use of vacuum technology. Convum suction cups and Convum vacuum pads take that technology a step further, by applying pneumatic technology to create an active vacuum instead of merely a passive one.

A passive vacuum is created when air is forced out of a space and prevented from returning by non-active means. In the case of a regular suction cup, whether it is pressed on glass or some other smooth surface, the air under it is pushed out in such a way that prevents it from returning, without any further effort on your part.

How It Works

Pneumatic suction devices work on the principle of creating a vacuum when you cannot simply depend on a passive vacuum, particularly if you are dealing with surfaces that are irregular and a proper seal cannot be formed by the suction cup. The air has to be constantly sucked into the cup as in a household vacuum cleaner where a motor drives the air in one direction, pulling more air up through an attached hose, which in this case is attached to a suction cup.

Industrial Applications

Previously, mechanical grippers were used to pick up and shift objects and raw materials through an assembly or factory line. Vacuum based technology makes it possible, through suction, for fragile material such as glass to be picked in a way that is safe, without causing any damage to the material. This technology is used in industries that require a more delicate mechanical means of picking up objects and products than grippers can provide.

One of the good things about pneumatic suction devices is that the strength of the lift provided can be adjusted by regulating the air pressure. It is important in industrial applications to allow for some leeway  instead of making the suction force only just as strong as is necessary to lift whatever objects need to be lifted.

Convum suction cups and Convum vacuum pads are at the cutting-edge of pneumatic suction technology, and they can be of great use in pneumatic systems to handle delicate and fragile objects.
